Settle into a real-time strategy game called Alliance: Future Combat and you naturally expect a little sci-fi. The name of Serbian developer Gameyus Interactive's wannabe epic evokes thoughts of cataclysmic battles taking place many years from now, a feeling emphasized by a box emblazoned with space-age soldiers and jets that look like Vipers, as well as a plot about genetic engineering. But not so fast. All of this "future combat" actually takes place in the distant year of 2008. All of the fighting is done by contemporary-looking soldiers and tanks. And the gameplay takes you back in time to the days when RTS programmers had yet to figure out such intricacies as pathfinding, level design, and visual presentation.

Army Men RTS is a deep and strategic adventure that doesn't intimidate like other real-time strategy games. It features an intuitive interface and is easy to pick up and play. Though accessible, the game forces players to think about how to strategically build and manage troops, vehicles and buildings while fighting in an all-out war. Players can view the fully 3-D world with a changeable camera. Multiple ways to play include a reward-based campaign mode, special operations and turnkey wars with great battles. You can even unlock secret "intelligence files" with good performances.

At any rate, no story is needed. You start off clearing levels by killing baddies with the game's standard collection of shooter weaponry. Then you move on to more focused goals and kill enemies with special weapons like grenades, perform stealth kills, handle mission objectives, and so on. However, there is no depth to any of these missions, which consist of clearing levels by ripping around and blasting everything that moves on a clock. Some levels can be blazed through in no more than a couple of minutes, and even the addition of special objectives doesn't slow you down. Stealth kills just mean that you have to murder people with a silenced pistol or a knife instead of a submachine gun or assault rifle. And missions with objectives involve going to numbered locations on the map and killing everyone that you encounter.
