According to the Chinese calendar, the seventh month of the year marks the time when restless spirits break free from hell to mix among the mortals. During this time, specific rules must be followed to avoid falling prey to the damned: Do not whistle, for it will only invite them into the house; do not turn at the sound of your name, for it will open your soul to them; and never disturb ashes on the ground, for it will only anger them.
